“Is it time to take a break from rosé?” asked wine critic Christopher Waters in a recent article in The Globe and Mail.
Nope, is my unequivocal response.
I’m a firm believer that there’s a great pink for many wine-loving moments, especially as the fall entertaining season gets into full swing, whether you’re hosting outside or inside.
I’m a fan of Waters’ weekly column and in this piece he shared a roundup of wines that were solid choices to sip as rosé alternatives when it’s a hot and humid day. The article did, however, make me think about the versatility of rosé. It’s well suited for both hot and steamy fall days and cooler ones too, and rosé is an ideal companion for a wide range of menus, snacks and occasions.
So… I’m paying homage to rosé with a lineup of bottles that I’ve been enjoying lately. Sharing recommendations in case you’re looking for something perfectly pink and delicious. And because I love great tablesettings and pretty glassware, I’ve also included a few shopping finds to make your get-together both tasty and stylish!
The Pretty One
Gérard Bertrand Côte Des Roses Rosé: You know this one. The elegant bottle with a rose articulated in the glass base. It’s a crowd-pleaser. The classic blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah grapes is fruity, elegant and crisp. You won’t be disappointed. Shop it here at the LCBO.
The Special One
Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Rosé Brut VQA: This lovely local sparkling rosé is full and beautifully perfumed with notes of strawberry and citrus melding with rich brioche and nuts. It’s a great choice for a special get-together. At the LCBO or directly from HenryofPelham.com
The Provencal One
Château La Tour De L’Évêque Rosé: If I recall, this one was a reco from my oenophile friend Dick Snyder. Zippy and juicy, this rosé makes a great match if you’re serving fresh, flavour-packed salads and Mediterranean fare with plenty of herbs and olives. Here at the LCBO.
The Modern One
Saintly The Good Rosé: Crisp and round, this rosé is a lovely composite of strawberry, raspberry, citrus and peach. And it’s made using grapes from Niagara, too; another reason to shop it to support Ontario’s local winemakers. A solid, easy-to-like kind of wine that won’t disappoint. Stop by your local Wine Rack store or the LCBO to pick up the pink pick.
The Perfect One For Rosé Cocktails
Pink Poodle: If you’re planning to serve a pink cocktail at your next soirée, check out this collection of rosé cocktail recipes to find a favourite sipper and then consider picking up a bottle of this cheap and cheerful rosé from the Wine Rack. As the name and branding suggest, this one is all about fun and light-hearted get-togethers and I’m not arguing with that. ‘Cuz you know, sometimes wine just doesn’t have to be serious.
The Local One
Malivoire Ladybug Rosé: If you’re grilling outside and looking for a bright, flavour-packed and food-friendly rosé, go with this charming vino. It tastes exactly like its delightful cherry-pink hue would suggest. Also at the LCBO or directly from Malivoire.com
